Guoan Zheng, Ph.D.

Dr. Guoan Zheng is the UTC Associate Professor at the University of Connecticut, with a joint appointment from the Biomedical Engineering Department and the Electrical Engineering Department. His primary field of expertise lies in microscopy, optical engineering, biophotonics, computational imaging, and lab-on-a-chip devices. Dr. Zheng’s current research interests include Fourier ptychography, high-throughput imaging technologies, super-resolution imaging, phase retrieval techniques, and the development of optofluidics and chip-scale imaging solutions.

Dr. Zheng got his M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 2008 and 2013. He received the Lemelson-MIT Caltech Student Prize in 2011 for his development of chip-scale microscopy solutions. He got the Caltech Demetriades Thesis Prize in 2013 for his development of the Fourier ptychography technology.

Dr. Zheng’s research has resulted in one book on Fourier ptychography (IOP press), more than 90 peer-reviewed publications, and 20 issued/pending patents, 4 of which have been extensively reported and highlighted by national media agencies. The Fourier ptychography technology has also become one sub-chapter in Dr. Joseph W. Goodman’s classic textbook Introduction to Fourier Optics (4th edition).
